Camera Light, ISO Settings!

Controlling your camera light sensitivity with the ISO setting is one of the most important task as a photographer. Digital cameras enables your to change ISO settings just like the traditional film cameras were you choose certain sensitivity based on ISO settings such as ISO 200 or ISO 400.gardenDigital camera ISO settings are derived form the cameras amplifying a signal from the sensor rather than a build-in rating as in film.

Learning about camera light sensitivity will put you in a position to taking great photos for almost any occasion. The sensitivity controls how your deal with certains photo needs, from the amount of light to a desired shutter speed. Low ISO settings such as ISO 100 and 200 are less sensitive, or a bit "slower" than ISO 400 because it usually takes a slower shutter speed to properly expose the image. A higher ISO setting enables an image to be recorded with a faster shutter speed. Choosing the best ISO setting is one of the most important settings that you can make. High ISO settings, such as ISO 800, would enable you to shoot in lower-light settings with faster shutter speeds. However, there is a good chance you would end up with more digital noise in your photos.

It is important to maintain a good balance with camera light in order to produce high quality photos. Digital noise is similar to grain in traditional photography and is minimized when you choose a low ISO setting. The best picture quality usually comes from a lower ISO setting on your camera. I would suggest using ISO 100 or 200 for traditional photography. gardenIn come cases such as night time photography, a higher ISO setting like ISO 800 or 1000 is appropriate. Some built-in flashes are good sources of camera light and can help reduce dark photos during the night.

The only disadvantage to this is your photos may have considerable digital noise. If you set your camera to a high ISO setting for night time photography and the settings produce limited noise, you might want to use this setting on a regular basis. Please keep in mind the conditions outside or time of day could play a major role on how your photos would turn out. It is always a good idea to study outside conditions and lighting very careful before taking pictures.

The images on this page was taken from a Nikon D300 DSLR digital camera. As you can see, the ISO sensitivity settings are located on the shooting menu of the camera. These examples are for illustrations only and not every digital camera ISO settings are located in the same place. Please check your camera manual to determine how to set the ISO settngs for your digital camera.
